Nature can create some truly weird and wonderful things. The natural lifecycle of plants especially can produce some hauntingly beautiful transformations and downright bizarre and eerie shapes. Just in time for Halloween season, we’ve put together a few of our favourite spooky stems.
Did you know that this is what snapdragons look like when they go to seed? These eerily beautiful shapes look like tiny fairy skulls growing from your plant. If you’ve got some snaps in your garden, try out leaving the flowerheads on and watch them go to seed.
Similarly, clematis also takes on an incredible form when it goes to seed, transforming from flowers to wispy, feathery puffballs straight out of a Dr. Seuss book.
What’s more appropriate for Halloween than glistening, blood-red foliage? And we must say this oak leaf, especially with its spiky, serrated edges fully fits the brief.
Are you unsettled by this? We are also unsettled. This uncanny image is the result of plucking out the petals from your sunflowers. Give it a go for a spooky flowerhead.
These otherworldly flowers are called anthuriums, featuring huge lilypad-like spathes (which are often mistaken for the petal) plus a long, waxy spadix in the middle, which is the actual flower.
This particular variant features a striking green-pink colour combination that lives up to all your gothic fantasies.
Did you know black calla lilies existed? Well, technically they’re a very deep shade of purple or maroon so they appear almost black. Like the anthurium, the calla lily also features a spathe - the stunning, trumpet-shaped “petal”. With its striking form and deep gothic colour, it’s a match made for halloween.
And finally, we’ve got this scarecrow-like oddity for you. These are dried seed pods from poppies! So if you’ve ever wondered where the poppy seeds on your muffin come from - this is it. Bon Appétit.
We’re here to share some of our expert tips to make your flowers pop when you arrange them front-facing.
We couldn’t resist partnering with Universal to create two limited-edition arrangements to celebrate the release of Sense & Sensibility.
