Since 2022, we have partnered with Dementia Adventure - an award-winning charity that helps people living with dementia and their carers get outside, stay active, and enjoy more of life’s simple pleasures. “An estimated 982,000 people across the UK are living with a diagnosis of dementia, with that number projected to rise to over 1.4 million by 2040.” - Dementia Adventure
Dementia is an umbrella term for over 100 different types of degenerative illnesses and diseases that affect brain health, of which the most common is Alzheimer's disease.
Dementia can affect activities of daily living, language and communication, planning and problem-solving, orientation, movement, emotions and behaviour. It does not always involve memory loss, even though it is most commonly associated with it.
“In fact, someone develops dementia every three minutes. It’s estimated that two-thirds of people with dementia are living in the community and are likely to be looked after by an unpaid family caregiver.” - Dementia Adventure
Everyone experiences dementia differently and each person’s experience is unique. Whether or not someone develops dementia can depend on a combination of age, genes, lifestyle and other health conditions.
As a society, dementia affects us all.
While there is no cure, there are several treatments and interventions that can help slow down the progression of dementia and enable a more fulfilled life. This is why Dementia Adventure exists.
Dementia Adventure believes that people living with dementia can continue to enjoy life; they focus on what people can do, not what they can’t. Their mission focuses on inspiring people living with dementia to connect with nature and the outdoors, and support their family, friends and their communities through activities that foster joy, confidence, and a sense of possibility.
You can find out more about Dementia Adventure’s work on their website.
After a diagnosis, it is common for many people with dementia to become socially isolated and go outdoors less, which can negatively impact their physical, cognitive, and emotional health, often resulting in a more rapid progression of their symptoms. Research shows, however, that activity and connection with nature and community have a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of people with dementia.
The charity's approach, underpinned by evidence, therefore focuses on dementia-inclusive outdoor-based activity, supported breaks, dementia awareness raising and dedicated support sessions for family carers and companions. Multi-sensory engagement, immersion in nature, and social interactions help to lift moods, reduce stress, apathy, and depression. Additionally, this can help improve memory, attention, and communication, as well as sleeping and eating patterns for people living with dementia. How so? - because being around others, engaged with nature and the outdoors, brings joy and a sense of belonging.
Dementia Adventure inspires new experiences, hope, and a sense of possibility for everyone. The right support, and accessibility to that support, can help with a slower progression of the dementia stages and, therefore, a much improved quality of life.
“Up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 risk factors, including: high LDL Cholesterol, hearing loss, high blood pressure, air pollution, sleep, smoking and social isolation." - Alzheimer's Research UK, 2025
Dementia Adventure’s mission is close to our hearts and naturally linked to our belief that flowers bring us closer together and closer to nature - they are a way to experience the beauty of our environment and spark moments of joy and calm.
In addition to the generous donations from all our fabulous members, which have contributed to making many of Dementia Adventure’s experiences possible - from activities to holidays and training sessions -, we have also been involved in two major events last year.
Picnic and Flower Arranging at Another Place Hotel
Dementia Adventure organised a special picnic day for their guests at Another Place Hotel in the Lake District, immersed in stunning natural scenery. The day was filled with stimulating activities - from a garden tour with insights into plants and changes through the seasons to a relaxed picnic lunch. We supported this event with beautiful blooms, giving each person living with dementia and their carer a chance to connect, arrange flowers together, and take home their creation.
Dementia Adventure shared the touching feedback from the day with us, showcasing the stories people shared of the special bonds they were able to form with others in similar situations as they were able to just chat and connect while arranging flowers.
The Big Green Picnic Launch
The real highlight of 2025 was the launch of the Big Green Picnic, a nationwide summer campaign co-created by Right at Home and Dementia Adventure, which invited local offices to host dementia-inclusive gatherings in different outdoor spaces.
The series of events all centred around connection and community, shaped by the delivery of different sensory or crafting activities and allowing for quality time and a relaxing environment to enjoy nature and togetherness.
Freddie was there to support the first launch picnic and deliver a hands-on flower arranging workshop, helping everyone mingle and create summer arrangements. We were so pleased to hear from Dementia Adventure that our session all about blooms was the highlight for many participants!
We are proud to keep supporting Dementia Adventure in 2026 and are already looking forward to our upcoming event in January as part of the Green Letter Days programme. This will be a huge virtual live workshop for over 100 people living with dementia and their carers. Each pair will receive a bunch of fresh, seasonal flowers and a beautiful vase, while Freddie will guide them through making an arrangement in a live webinar. We are so pleased to hear that the event booked out within 24h and can’t wait to inspire more moments of joy and connection.
A lot of this is only possible because of you, our wonderful members. All those donations at checkout added up to something truly incredible, over £12,000 for Dementia Adventure in 2025 and thereby helping to make a real impact.
